Cycling in Norfolk

The Roads

Norfolk is perfect for cycling.  The county is blessed with hundreds of miles of quiet country lanes.  We can cycle for miles without coming across a car!   There is the odd hill but they don’t last for too long.  We cycle for fitness and fun – and also enjoy the odd stop along the way.  Below are descriptions and links to some of Norfolk’s cycle routes and further down are a few suggestions of places to stop.

Trunch Quiet Lane
National Cycle Route 30

Regional Cycle Route 30

The Regional Cycle Route 30 passes the end of the drive to Burrow Cottage. The route joins the National Long Distance route 1 at Wighton (Just inland from Wells Next Sea) and takes quiet lanes to Cromer and then to Mundesley and along the Coast to Great Yarmouth.  Click here for more details of Route 30.

Regional Cycle Route 33

Regional Cycle Route 33 is a relatively short route that heads up to Cromer from Alysham.  It passes Blickling Hall, the Ittringham Cafe, Felbrigg Hall and finishes in Cromer.  Click here for a map.

National Cycle Network 1

National Cycle Route 1

A long distance cycle route connecting Dover and the Shetland Islands – via the east coast of England and Scotland.  It passes through Norwich to Fakenham and then on to Kings Lynn.  Cycling part of this route from Burrow Cottage is possible. Click here for more details.

Heydon Cafe

Situated in the middle of the beautiful village of Heydon just opposite the village green.  This cafe has a wonderful selection of homemade cakes and in my opinion does the best toasted teacake money can buy!

Here is their website.

Heydon Cafe
Ittringham Cafe

Ittringham Cafe

The Ittringham Cafe is a small community run shop and cafe that first opened in 1637.   It has a good selection of drinks with home made goodies to tempt you.  The shop was threatened with closure but has recently been saved!  Its sits on the Regional Cycle route 33.  Click here for more.

Coltishall Cafe

A bright and airy cafe with a very warm welcome.  Great homemade cakes too. More information here.

Coltihall Cafe
Cart Gap Cafe

Cart Gap Cafe

A  very pleasant cafe – great bacon sandwiches and the cakes are wonderful too.  It is just a couple of Kilometers off Cycle Route 30 and well worth the deviation!

Lessingham Star

We love stopping here – its just the right distance from home and also sits on the Regional Cycle Route 30.  It’s a great place to re-hydrate!  Here is their website.
